Measures for safe operation and work in explosive atmospheres

Explosion protection covers equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres(ATEX for short), i.e. environments that can become explosive due to mixtures of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapours, mists or dusts with air under atmospheric conditions in which, when ignited, the flame spreads to the entire unburned mixture.

It is the duty of the State to protect the health and safety of persons, in particular workers, within its territory, in particular against the dangers arising from the use of equipment and systems providing protection against potentially explosive atmospheres.

The products concerned may be placed on the market and put into service only if, when properly installed and maintained and used in accordance with their intended use, they comply with the requirements of the Explosion Protection Regulation. The Regulations also lay down requirements for the safety and health protection of workers who may be exposed to explosive atmospheres, and measures for safe operation and work in such atmospheres.

The requirements apply to these products:

  • equipment and protective systems designed for use in potentially explosive atmospheres;
  • safety devices, controls and operating devices which are intended for use outside potentially explosive atmospheres but which are necessary or useful for the safe operation of equipment or protective systems in relation to explosion hazards;
  • components intended for installation in equipment and protective systems.

Conformity assessment procedures ensure that equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres comply with the essential health and safety requirements. Compliance with explosion prevention and protection measures shall also be ascertained. Notified Bodies are bodies for assessing the conformity of products covered by the Regulations on explosion protection and are notified to the European Commission.
